Democratic Social Enterprises?
The growth of social enterprises has been celebrated but how many of them are democratic or participative?
UK government policy is to focus on the output of social enterprise and ignore its structure. This is unlike the rest of Europe where co-ops are the core of social enterprise policy and democratic governance is usually a requirement.
Many UK social enterprises are therefore 'managerialist' in nature, relying on normal management authority as if they were ordinary businesses with normal employee / manager relationships.
This is a tragic waste of one great potential benefit of the social enterprise boom, to teach self-management and cooperative teamworking to their workers and clients alongside their social outputs.
A mistake which has not been made in Italy, Sweden, France, Spain and other EU states.

Managerialism
Absolutely valid point. There is potential for this to accelerate if various equity investment funds successfully establish themselves on the US social entrepreneurial model, rather than the EU social economy model.
