John Tilley: Session Speaker – A People’s Railway
John Tilley is Regional Secretary for the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT). Born in Walton, Liverpool in 1961, John Tilley has lived in Skelmersdale, West Lancashire since 1981. John worked as a railway signaller for 26 years between 1979 and 2004, working all over the North West. In 2005, he was elected as the region’s full time RMT Regional Organiser and was re-elected in 2010 and 2015.
Having previously served two three year terms on the RMT National Executive, John was a member of the Railtrack/Network Rail Pension Trustee Committee for 13 years serving six years as its Chair. He also served alongside Bill Morris as Trade Union members of Labour’s Policy Commission for Local Government, Housing, Transport & the Regions.
RMT is a progressive, democratic trade union with more than 80,000 members from almost every sector of the transport industry – from the mainline and underground railways, shipping and offshore, buses and road freight. RMT negotiates with over 150 transport-sector companies.
The “Building An Economy To Serve People And Not Profit” conference will take place in Manchester on Thursday 21st January (10am-4pm) in the Central Hall.
